About this deal

Shari Lapena writes stories across the gamut of the mystery/thriller genre. Some of her stories are more of mysteries, with clues galore where you can suss out the culprit. Not this one. I would categorize this as more of a neighborhood thriller. There are no real clues to follow, but there are plenty of surprises. Just when you think you've got a grip on what's going on, the story changes on you and you have to start again. It's great fun. Overall, Not a Happy Family remains the best of La Peña’s domestic thrillers. While Everyone Here is Lying has a similar vibe, it left me questioning characters’ actions and seeking more explanations.

NYT has a feature on pet cemetery owner turnedfelonturned best-selling ghostwriterLara Love Hardin. Ruth Madievsky chats about her debut novel, All-Night Pharmacy (Catapult), “immigrant shame, and how it takes empathy to be a great writer and healthcare professional,” with The Millions. I was obsessed with Everyone Here Is Lying and read it in less than two days, desperate to know what had happened to Avery Wooler. The set-up is so clever with each resident having something to hide that I never knew who to trust. Fast paced, tightly-plotted and with twists so well executed they floored me. Loved every word!” Gully goes to the Seton’s house and asks to talk to Derek. She asks him if he and Avery were ever in the treehouse, and when he says he doesn’t remember. Derek has no alibi for the afternoon Avery went missing. As the story progressed, I found myself immersed in the twists and turns, unable to tear myself away from the gripping narrative. The author skillfully wove a web of suspicion and intrigue, keeping me on the edge of my seat with each revelation. The relentless pace and the constant sense of unease made it a rollercoaster of emotions, which I couldn't get enough of.An incredibly clever set-up that made for one of the most gripping and surprising thrillers I’ve read in a while. A one-sitting read." Cheri Pies, Who Guided Lesbian Couples in Parenthood, Dies at 73.” NYT has an obituary. Authors on Air William does not mention that Avery was home or that he hit her. Erin tells the police that Avery is impulsive and defiant.

THE mistress of dysfunctional family stories, Lapena’s seventh stand-alone thriller is magnificent, a perfect demonstration of her exceptional skill as a storyteller… Utterly compelling, this is as good as it gets when it comes to suburban noir. ” From the very start, I was hooked by this idyllic yet secretive neighborhood. With each of them hiding plenty from both one another as well as themselves, it was fun to watch the police unravel it all. The downside to this, however, was twofold. First off, the police themselves were irritatingly inept. Not in the way, however, that sells a thriller as there wasn’t a secondary character there to put the pieces together themselves. But to make matters worse, the multiple POVs left literally nothing to the imagination. This meant that with each reveal, attention merely moved on to someone else, letting all the delicious secrets simply drop right then and there. I absolutely adore Shari Lapena's compulsive thrillers and her new novel is her best yet. More twists than a roller coaster."ETA: The library didn’t cooperate so Marialyce, my reading buddy, and I didn’t get our copies at the same time but we did enjoy discussing it when we both finished. (This was memorable enough that I didn’t forget the plot as soon as I finished!) The suspense here is real; Lapena does a great job of exposing layers of domestic dishonesty and betrayal one conversation at a time.” Gully goes to search the treehouse where Avery liked to hang out, but finds nothing. The anonymous witness who says she saw Avery get into Ryan’s car offers to come to the station, but then doesn’t show up. But the witness calls and provides a description of Avery that seems valid. Shari Lapena consistently delivers entertaining SUSPENSE, and this one is no exception! I enjoyed my time in Stanhope, and look forward to her next!

Italy: a horror movie filmed in a crumbling, possibly haunted, castle owned by the estranged aunt of the starlet. What could be better? As the lines between reality and the movie plot begin to blur in this tautly written novel, family secrets begin to emerge that if revealed, might lead to unforeseen (and possibly deadly) consequences for everyone.”— Jennifer Winberry, Hunterdon County Library, NJ William Wooler has been having an affair, with his beautiful neighbor, Nora-an affair that ended unexpectedly this afternoon at a motel up the road. William Wooler is having an affair with neighbor Nora Blanchard. William is a local doctor at their picture perfect town of Stanhope. He’s married with two children, the same as Nora, but he’s head over heels in love with her. Nora however ends the relationship—and it just so happens to be on the same day that William’s youngest child Avery has gone missing. This story is not what you think it is—everyone is lying. 😝 In an act of resistance towards her husband’s exploitation, Rui eats a bowl of seeds that sprout from her body. The Forest Brims Over is a surreal unfolding of a marriage exploring how gender affects our relationships with others and ourselves.”— Andrew King, Secret Garden Bookshop, Seattle, WA Kala is a literary thriller at its best—you are at once consumed with the characters, the place, the mystery. Colin Walsh gives us layer upon layer: past and present; characters, now and then; all of it building suspense and intimacy. Wow.”— Amanda Hall, Kepler’s Books, Menlo Park, CAExperience the chilling atmosphere of a seemingly safe neighborhood teetering on the brink of chaos.
