In 2017, Iggulden released the first book in the fantasy series Darien: Empire of Salt, under the pen name C.

His The Dangerous Book for Boys was an iconic success, and he has written three bestselling historical series, including his "Wars of the Roses" saga. Told with Conn Iggulden’s usual grace, Empire effortlessly transports the reader to one of the most significant times of the ancient world. Contentious material about living people that is unsourced or poorly sourced must be removed immediately. Every installment brought something new—factual, speculative, and philosophical—to learn and this doesn’t change even though I’m four books into the series now. Then there’s Kashar and Kachiun the loyal one, Temuge the fearful, Bekter the devious, and Hoelun the strong mother who protects them all as best as she could.By rejecting non-essential cookies, Reddit may still use certain cookies to ensure the proper functionality of our platform. As the drums of battle draw closer, can Pericles rise to victory once more--or will the world's greatest empire fall under his watch?

Pericles is the lion of Athens, the leader of this great state, and he will do anything to protect his home and reputation. I have now read both books about Pericles and thought that the second was slightly better than the first. I'll give it 4 stars though I liked it a lot because the story was too short and too simplified for the complexity of the story. In 2010, media coverage emerged of a proposed film, Emperor: Young Caesar, about the early life of Julius Caesar, covering the years from 92 BC to 71 BC, and based on the first two novels of Iggulden's Emperor series, The Gates of Rome and The Death of Kings. The characters were still great, and the strength, perseverance and love you feel throughout the book does keep you reading through all the ups and downs of the story. So that when the fighting is over, Julius will face the greatest threat to him yet—a man who wants Rome for himself. Now they will be united again by a shock wave from the north, where a gladiator named Spartacus is building an army of seventy thousand slaves—to fight a cataclysmic battle against Rome itself. Genghis Khan, born Temujin, has been dead for almost a thousand years now, and yet his story and legends still live on. As young Gaius and Marcus grow to manhood, they are trained in the art of combat—under the tutelage of one of Rome’s most fearsome gladiators.

When a sudden catastrophe brings Sparta to its knees, Pericles sees a golden opportunity to forever shift the balance of power in his city's favour. Missed a great chance to have an interaction between Pericles and Pleistonax which could have made for fascinating reading. The author has written a fifth book in the series, Emperor: The Blood of Gods, which deals with the rise of Augustus and events after the end of The Gods of War.
